Executive Committee IFAS organized the side-event "International Cooperation on Transboundary Watercourse Management taking into  account the interests of all states in the region".

More information about the meeting from the UNESCAP website
The Deputy Chairman of EC IFAS received the member of the European Parliament at EC IFAS headquarters on February 24. In the center of the discussion was the question about the effectiveness of the EU assistance to Central Asia in the water sector.

Strategic partnership with Central Asia has high importance for Germany. In June 2007, the new partnership strategy between the European Union and Central Asia was initiated by the Government of Germany. A wide range of projects in the field of education, sustainable economic development, legal and juridical reforms, environmental and economic change is aimed to support the development of Central Asia through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Organizations of UN system

EC IFAS aims to involve the specialized organizations and programs of the UN system to address specific socio-economic and environmental issues in the Region.

UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia

The political mission of UN, implemented by the Centre in support to the activities of EC IFAS provides an opportunity to initiate the high-level discussions on the regional security issues.

Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)

Within the OSCE space the ecological security problems of Central Asia are amongst the most acute. In support to strengthening regional cooperation with regard to the problems of the Aral Sea basin the OSCE’s multidimensional approach to security makes it a particularly appropriate partner for the EC IFAS future efforts.

UNECE under the Programme on Transboundary Water Management in Central Asia, supported by the Government of Germany through GIZ GmbH is providing assistance to the Central Asian countries in the development of cooperation in transboundary water management. The work of regional institutions in Central Asia is hampered by their weak position in the political system. Recognition and implementation of guidelines in water sector are missing. Capacities of regional institutions responsible for water management (in particular IFAS – International Fund for saving the Aral Sea) need improvements.
