May 25-27th Astana hosts session of the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development in Central Asia. The agenda included discussions on strengthening the political and institutional framework for regional cooperation, strengthening the capacity for decision making in the context of implementing the Regional Action Plan for Environmental Protection (REAP).


Participants discussed the issues of alignment of the Subregional Strategy for Sustainable Development in Central Asia by the national governments, of the condition of signing/ratifying of the Framework Convention for the protection of the environment for sustainable development in Central Asia.


In the context of discussion of international activity on sustainable development the outcome of IV Astana Economic Forum, the preparations for the Seventh Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe" for the upcoming September 24-27, 2011, preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 were reviewed.


The meeting was followed by a formal transfer of the ICSD chairmanship from the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2011-2012.
