The International Conference on “Europe-Asia Transboundary Water Cooperation” will be held from 15 to 16 December 2011 which is organized in the framework of the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention).


The International High Level Conference and the Workshop are organized in the framework of the UNECE Programme “Regional Dialogue and Cooperation on Water Resources Management in Central Asia”, supported by the Government of Germany through GIZ, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan.


The Prepcom conference “Towards the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO +20): Water Cooperation Issues” is organized in Dushanbe, Tajikistan 19-20th October.

Water cooperation issues will be discussed for entering the agenda of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development.

Adding together, the year 2013 in accordance with the General Assembly resolution is declared as the International Year of Water Cooperation.


In the framework of regional cooperation to prevent conflicts on transboundary rivers the seminar on "Early warning of potential problem situations associated with the use of transboundary rivers resources in Central Asia" was held in Almaty on September 26, 2011.


Executive Committee prepared proposals for inclusion into the Program of the 6th World Water Forum which is aimed at finding solutions to the water problems.

Experts discussed ways to improve international cooperation in managing transboundary waters and better assessment of natural disasters risks, climate change and anthropogenic impacts on water resources.


As part of activities of the expert group on introduction of amendments and additions to the statute documents of IFAS the national consultations were held.


To date, consultations were held in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, the comments and proposals were submitted by experts from Kazakhstan. During consultations the parties discussed the conceptual elements of improving the legal framework of IFAS prepared by the UNECE.


Executive Committee IFAS made comments and suggestions to the ASBP-3 received as a feedback from relevant ministries and agencies of the Central Asian states. Approval of the edited version by Governments is expected for further endorsement of the document by the IFAS Board.


The Seventh Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe” was held in Astana (Kazakhstan) 21-23 September 2011.

Executive Committee IFAS organized the side-event "International Cooperation on Transboundary Watercourse Management taking into  account the interests of all states in the region".


May 26, 2011 the Board of Executive Directors of the International Development Association approved a grant (IDA H677-7C) in the amount of five million six hundred thousand Special Drawing Rights (SDR 5,600,000) granted to the Executive Committee of IFAS (EC IFAS) for the Project to modernize the Hydrometeorological Service in Central Asia.


SPECA meeting will discuss a Plan of Action to Strengthen Stability and Sustainable Development of Afghanistan through Regional Economic Cooperation in Central Asia and the ways of its implementation.
