The purpose of the meeting, which was attended by experts from the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) and the OECD, was to discuss draft methodology document and improvement recommendations to the countries of the region, as well as to exchange experience on how best to overcome obstacles to the surface water quality regulation reform in the EECCA.

EC IFAS Chairman participated in a panel session on "Ensuring Food Security in Central Asia» within IV Astana Economic Forum.


In his speech, Chairman of EC IFAS touched on the issues of the relationship of water resources and food security in Central Asia.

2 May 2011, a meeting of UN Deputy Secretary General, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Noeleen Heyzer and the Chairman of EC IFAS Sagit Ibatullin took place in the office of Executive Committee. The newly appointed head of the subregional office of ESCAP for the Northern and Central Asia was presented to EC IFAS.


The 1st Asia-Pacific Regional Synthesis Meeting for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit and 6th World Water Forum takes place on the 21st and 22nd April 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand. The EC IFAS proposals on the priority development directions will be delivered for the agenda.

On behalf of the United Nations Development Group for Europe and Central Asia, UNDP organized a third meeting on managing slow onset and other crisis risks in Central Asia on 14-15 April 2011, in Almaty. This meeting was organized for representatives of international, donor, and inter-governmental organizations working in the region. The meeting and its background papers covered four inter-related areas of regional risk and risk management in Central Asia.

The meeting within the UNECE Initiative on the National Policy Dialogues on IWRM took place in Turkmenistan. The experts from the water sector made an overview of water policies in Turkmenistan and proposals for possible activities on implementation of the river basin management approach within the national policy dialogues.

A subregional workshop to enhance understanding of and strengthen capacity for the implementation of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context, and in particular the Convention’s Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment, will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 28 March to 1 April 2011. The workshop, which will bring together 25 participants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, will focus on the water sector.
